Spring is Coming
You can see it on the ground and in the trees. You can sense it in the length of the days. You can definitely feel it in the air—spring is coming! With the change of a season, especially in the Midwest, environmental factors can drastically alter your mood or even your health. Have you struggled to stay healthy this winter? Sometimes the cold weather that forces us inside coupled with the dry air caused by central heating is the perfect environment for viruses and bacteria to breed that cause flus and colds. With the weather starting to change, there are things you can do to your home to ensure a healthy and happy spring with optimum indoor air quality.
Spring into Action
Spring cleaning is a natural part of yearly home maintenance and here are a few ideas to add to your list of tasks:
- Check your filters – Even if it’s not hot enough for the air conditioning just yet, now is the time to make sure you have a fresh filter installed when the heat really sets in.
- Schedule your air ducts to be cleaned – While you’re getting the A/C ready for game day, take a look at the ducts as well. Even though you’ve been running the heat all winter, inactive ducts can collect dust and other pathogens and you don’t want that in your air stream. So before you turn the air conditioning on, make sure the ducts are spic and span.
- Give your fans a hand – Just like your A/C, it’s likely that your ceiling fans have been idle since the fall, which means that they might be harboring dust on their blades. Grab a ladder and carefully clean them off before you turn them on and send the dust flying. All these tips will make sure you are getting proper air flow.
No Cold, No Mold
Here in Iowa, the wet air and weather of spring can cause mold in homes, which is damaging to the building and to the health of those inside it. Mold grows where there is moisture so use air conditioners and dehumidifiers during humid months. If you discover your home has a leak, fix it immediately. If your home has flooded, have it professionally mold remediated. Mold loves wet carpets so if you have basement or bathroom carpets, check them periodically to protect yourself.
